Written English

There are literally millions of books out there for us to read. When a book is written, automatically the author of a book is the owner of "copyright" for that book. This means that noone but the author has the legal right to "copy" that book. They may not print the book either for their own use or that of others. (Exception is made by allowing others to quote snippets of the book for educational purposes.)

Copyright is not eternal and the copyright expires sometime after the author dies - the length of time depending on the country. Once the copyright expires, the work is said to be in the public domain, and anyone may use the work.

Here you will find many books that are in the public domain. I have listed them by genre and provided links to the books in order that you may read them to improve your reading comprehension skills.
